I read all these articles that mention fish per mile. I just read that the Kinnickinnic River in Wisconsin has a stretch that has 8,000 brown & brook trout per mile with a 8 mile canyon that averages 5,000 per mile. What do you think the numbers are on the better rivers in our area. You can also include the New England states .

I'd really like to find out what our figures are for trout per mile. I bet the Deerfield and Housy would top the list. I know how many the Beaverkill had last weekend. 3 per mile.

Joe,
You might be right.... It's hard to believe with all the insect activity going on that there were not more rising trout.
I'm beginning to believe those stats that the one fly shop gave us... 19,000 trout stocked but only 10% survival rate.

Are you asking total wild fish per mile? Stocked fish per mile? Are you asking total trout 6" or better or total trout in all size classes?
I recall shocking a very small stream in MA and remember we got around 80 mostly wild trout in 180 feet and that number includes young of the year up to around 10" fish which was the maximum size.
I found that typically not many stocked trout occured when we shocked in MA streams in August.
The most wild trout I heard of in Vermont was 21,000 per mile and 5000 wild trout 6" or better per mile.
At its best sites, the Battenkill held 508 and 430 wild trout 6" or better per mile last year. Remember to follow Uplanders post and sign the petition against stocking it. Hate to turn this political........

dw,
Holy Cr*p, 20k+ trout/mile. Thats trout Nirvana. However, I don't know how big they will get with all the competition for food. I see very small fish on average over time in that particular survey.
The better and better known trout streams that I fish in Wisconsin have an average of 2000 wild trout/mile of stream. Of this number a large portion are above average size (meaning 14"+) and some brutes measured in pounds and not inches.
I would love to know what the numbers of wild trout are for the Hoosic. I just sent Joe a web article regarding the wild trout of this river, which was written in I believe 02'. My quess would have to be 500 based on my fishing experiences.
Any other opinions? I'd love to hear them...
Mark

I think you may just be able to call or send a letter and say how many trout live in the Hoosic per mile in each of the age/size classes. Just specify which part of the river.

Mark
Have you ever fished the river I mentioned above?
I not looking for exact numbers or anything like that. I was just wandering if anyone had some rough ideas. It just seems like there are all these rivers with big numbers of trout. They just don't seem to be in New England.
