I fished the West Housatonic, from Clapp Park (the trestle) to Cadwell Road (the bridge by Greendale Street) for a couple hours late this morning/early afternoon.
The water was low, but not as low as I had half-expected/feared. The holes and structure where I have targeted trout in the past by Clapp Park have washed away and/or filled in. All I caught or saw on that end were dace.
The fishing improved as I approached Cadwell Road. I landed an 11" brown and (a little further up) a 12" rainbow as I got closer. There were also a bunch of trout (guesstimated in the 10" - 12" range) basking just below the bridge, but they weren't interested in what I was presenting.
On the way upstream, I nearly hooked a beaver that swam by maybe five feet away from me - - barely getting my line out of the water as he went by.
On my way back downstream, I passed by his camouflaged dam on the bank. There were two good sized (13"?) trout swimming around just a few feet from this busy beaver.
Climbing up the brushy bank on my way back to my car, a duck burst into the air two feet in front of me, leaving behind her nest with about a dozen eggs on it.
