The rivers were dangerously close to being low enough to fish, but it looks like Sat. will rain all day, so at least we won't have to do any fishing soon. ARRRRGGGGG I was checking the classifieds on another site, I should know better, and I came across a Hardy Perfect, 2 7/8, pre war, leaded finish in very nice condition, agate line guard. The good news is the asking price is so much beyond the available funds that I was never even tempted. And I have no rational, practical reason to "need " such a reel. But it sure does look nice! And I have just the rod for it. So -- since the fishin' stinks, what kind of gear would be on your dream list? New, old, graphite, bamboo, waders, vests, hats, anything? AgMD

Kim,
what a great topic since River/stream fly fishing is at kind of at a stand still, at least locally.
Because of available funds myself, as well as product availability. I use mostly graphite rods of the Redington & Orvis product line. Been pretty happy overall with those rods.
If I was to dream, I'd buy a Orvis Helios rod and reel setup in the versatile 5wt so I'd use it a lot. At this point being married w/children, its not really in the cards.
My father just purchased the RL Winston Passport rod, in 4wt, and I'm very impressed. So one of their high end rods I'd settle for as well, such as the Boron.
I do have a Bamboo cane rod that a very good friend permanently loaned me. Its a Headwaters rod, which I like. It isn't a high end brand or rod, but it actually works real well. So maybe I'd invest in a Cane rod myself, such as a Orvis Mighty mite with the nice engraved hardware. Yes, nice engraved hardware doesn't catch fish, but sure does look nice.
Kim, you really opened a door to dreaming. This Fly fishing sport is very addicting, and when you let your mind wonder as you can see, its a endless thought. But all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with the gear I have.
Tight-lines............Phil

Hi Kim,
You saw most of my toys. I would have to say that the Orvis Bamboo Superfine one piece 6 foot rod 5 wt rod was a dream come true. Right now I have an old Farlow early check reel probably made by Smith and wall 2 3/4 with an orvis WF5F line on it. It feels like I am throwing the line right from my hand.
As for a dream list, I would also like to get my hands on any pre 1920 Hardy bougle or perfect. I would also like to get my hands on a Uniqua 2 7/8ths, an old St. George 3 1/8ths. For steelhead fishing I would like to find an old Shakespeare 1900 that was made in the Hardy Perfect style.
A couple of Bamboo rods that I am always looking for on the auction sites are a Lee Wulff made by Farlow's one piece 6 foot rod, Or a HL Leonard "Catskill" pre fire 7 1/2 foot rod.
All and all I am pretty happy with the rods and reels that I have, but when you see a vintage rod or reel at a price you can't pass up then you just have to add it to the collection.
I hope to see you on a river in the near future,
Henry

I have the gear of a lifetime; all the rods I could ever want and need (bamboo, Thomas & Thomas, Orvis, etc.). I have a batch of Hardy reels, and the British-made Orvis Battenkills and CFOs (all BW&H (before wife and house)). I'm good. But, if I'm forced to dream, I want an old Hardy Perfect.... Oh, and for what it's worth, I wanted to fish this weekend, but the weather sucked. In years past, by this time in the season I'm deep in the mountains stirring up early season brookies and dodging inquisitive bear cubs....
