Fished the Hoosic in N. Pownal this AM. Caught a pair of hatchery browns and missed a few more. Both caught on #16 Queen of the Waters, fished wet, down and across. I did see a very few small Mayflies, but never closer than 20 feet away. The water has finally come down enough so that I can wade it, at least in some spots. And tomorrow night it will rain some more. ARGH !! I'll just have to fish it early morning -- before it rains. AgMD

Nice report! .....#16? geez I'm gonna need some specs if I keep up this trout fishing. I picked up a nice little 3wt so it looks like I'm in it. Rain is helping to keep water temps down. Some day I'd like to fish the hoosic.

Went back again this AM. Caught two on the same #16 QotW but couldn't get any one else to play. So I switched to a Egg Sucking Leach on a #10 Salmon hook. The heavy hook works deeper and doesn't cast like &%$#+ split shot. This seemed to be the answer. Caught four more and switched to a streamer also on a #10 Salmon hook. Caught three more. All were hatchery fish except for one very colorful 4" Rainbow and a 10" Brown that looked way to nice to be this years stocking. I have fished this stretch with a 7' 4wt. When the water is lower and I can wade more the light 7' rod is nice. When the water is up, like it is now, wading is limited so I like a rod that can reach where I can't wade to. This is a fast run of fairly shallow water. The bottom is all rock and rubble so the current changes every two foot. A longer rod for a lot of mending makes the rod work a lot easier. This is the perfect water for the 8' 6wt rod. When the water is lower and clear, I will fish it with the 7' 4 wt and I will probably not use anything heavier than an unweighted #14 fly. AgMD
