Thought that those of you who also like to throw the 2 handers would like to read this. Absolutely amazing!
Gerard Downey of Foxford set a new world record distance in 18 ft Spey casting competition at the Loughs Agency Fair on 8th March. He threw a magnificent 222 ft cast or 74 yds in the qualifiers.
I was watching him cast just about a minute before the record cast and he was putting out some monster lines and doing it with style. Well done Gerard, a great achievement.
Ruairi Costello from Co. Clare eventually won the final the next day with 196.7ft or 65.5 yds. Ruairi also won the salmon overhead and trout overhead competitions and was second in the accuracy.
The final results in the 18ft rod Spey competition were
1. Ruairi Costello, Ireland, 196.7 ft or 65.5 yds 2. Gerard Downey, Ireland, 191.9 ft or 63.96 yds 3. Gordon Armstrong, Scotland, 191.7 ft or 63.9 yds 4. James Chalmers, Scotland, 190.8 ft or 63.6 yds 5. Andrew Toft, Scotland, 177 ft or 59 yds 6. Iain Gardiner, Scotland, 163 ft or 54.3 yds.
All six finalists used carron 18 ft rods and Carron Jetstream 105 ft head Spey lines.
