Just wondering if anyone has used beetle patterns or Green Weenies for trout?
These are a really hot patterns from late May on here in the Midwest. I figure with all the over-hanging trees they would be a productive patterns.

I've never used beatles. A semi-local tyer from New York (Bob Mead) ties a lot of beatle patterns and is in Fly Tyer Magazine with his work.
As for the Green Weenies, I've never heard of that pattern. Is it some kind of Midge pattern or a Caddis Nymph?

Green Weenies are probably the easiest pattern ever created.
Hook: Your favorite 2xl nymph hook.
Thread: Chartreuse.
Body: Fine Chartreuse Chenille.
Tie a length of chartreuse or olive chenille and wrap to the rear of the hook shank.
Twist the loose length of chenille several times to so that it doubles over itself and use the twisted section to form a small tail about 1/2 the length of the hook shank.
Tie off the twisted section at the back of the hook shank so it doesn't untwist and half hitch a few times.
You now have the Green Weenie (inch worm).
Can you believe they sell these things for $2.50 each...

Funny you should mention that. Just tied up a bunch of green weenies last night. Picture and some instructions at www.flytyingworld.com/PagesF/fb-fredbridge.htm. As sugested there, I wrapped shank with thin lead wire to weight them. Intend to give them a try in the spring.

I've tried beetles for trout solo and in tandem with nymphs as a strike indicator with no luck in South County. I've caught several small smallies with them however. I'll keep trying though. I don't see why they wouldn't work as a terrestrial in the mid summer heat for the trout on a slow drift under a shaded area under an over hanging tree or branch.
