I'm a bit surprised that there are no posts about the Westfield River. Am I the only one fishing it or is it that nobody cares to share their experiences?

Haven't been out yet. I did get to a little stream north of Amherst a few weeks ago and caught a bunch of brookies and two stocked bows that literally turned upside down and let me drag them in soon after they realized thy were hooked. I am at this very moment being teased by dozens of mayflies hanging onto the screens on my porch in Northampton. This is strange in that I live at least 1/2 mile from any water. The wind must be right. I hope to hit the Westfield some evening or morning during the next few week. What are they taking in below the Gorge?

The lower Westfield has been pretty good. I have only been out a few times this year, but on the warmer days in the afternoon its been fun. And don't listen to Jeff. I don't think there are any fish in the gorge, just nasty weather. -Gregg

Yes- no fish in the gorge. Not a single one. Nothing but vicious hordes of bugs, and you're likely to be hit by a tornado. Don't fish there- go to the lower Westfield instead

I have to agree about the Gorge. I think I've caught one there this season. I have heard that it has been stocked especially for the TU party at Indian Hollow. So we will see. I plan to hit the Millers tomorrow evening and the E.B. early Saturday morning.
I had three species of mayfly and one stonefly on my patio door Sunday in Northampton. I have the Mill River in my backyard so that would be the source.

Well, I will tell you what...went out yesterday evening to test some gear and after some hard fishing I ended up stoned... not the chill Libs munchie kind either On a second note went out to the CT Riv the other day for Stripers and my buddy caught a 48'' from shore! Then his truck was broken into and several high end rods/reels, wallet, and all his turkey gear was taken...good day

That news about your friend really sucks!!! Must have been in the Holyoke/Chicopee area since I've heard the same sad tale over the years. Crack addicts looking for something to sell!!!
I'm heading to the Gorge on the EB Saturday morning. I hope there's trout to catch. Just got back from the Millers where things were pretty good. 4 clonebows and two browns that were rising to a sulphur(ish) hatch. If the flow had been around 300cfs instead of 500cfs all hell would have broken loose!!! I would have stayed longer but I have a very EARLY morning tomorrow. I should be sleeping now but I'm tying emergers for the next trip to that great river!!

I'll believe it when I see it Jeff. Maybe we should plan another outing, just be sure to pick a day that will have a huge lightning storm. Just to keep up the tradition.
Dan, that sucks big time. On a side note however, you talked Sarah into "needing" an Olympus so she can get underwater shots. So now she leaves her gear in the car and just takes the camera lately.
Have a good weekend and enjoy the holiday, -Gregg

I was there yesterday afternoon...once again poor planning landed me on the water in the midday sun (wife & I were scoping out DAR for a summer camping trip.)
Tough going, but there are certainly fish to be caught. I hooked a fatty on a nymph who was having none of it.... threw me a pink smile and headed back into his hole.
I love hanging out on the Westfield ...such a beautiful river. I imagine there is some horrible dry action in the evenings, too. Someday.

Been going to the East Branch(Gorge) in the evening for most of this month. Dry fly action has been GREAT. The water temps. at 7pm have been in the mid 60's. Lots of rising trout and very little angling that I can see although it's a BIG river so who knows.

fished the gorge this may. Pretty incredible place. talked to a guy that caught a "holdover". I had never heard that term before and upon his explanation all i could think was "no wonder there aren't many big fish out here". Catch and release is the only way to go.

I guess I'm lucky because I live right in Chesterfield and anywhere I go in this watershed I can catch fish. I see where and when the river is stressed during our busy season here, so I move elsewhere. You gotta go out and find the honey holes. They're not always easily located near the parking lot.
We're very lucky to have the quality watershed that we do. Help keep it that way. Get out and have fun. enjoy.

Hello there Wild guide,
that branch of the Westfield over through Chesterfield has still been producing? 6wt & myself have gone to the Housi a few weeks ago to a spot thats usually good for a few, but got skunked. Tried another few areas through the Housi with the same end result, but thats fishing.
6wt and myself & a another friend have often talked several times on the idea of parking one car a fair distance down stream, then driving another up stream, then fishing between the two. But I've never fished that river, and I'm unsure of where to begin.
I've checked out the Gorge before, but never seriously approached this area or river for that matter. So since your familiar with the Westfield river, any thoughts or locations to help us with our possible idea would be great!!
Thanks.................DRYFLYPHIL
