A thread by Rodkilla on the general board about his blog (http://therustyspinner.blogspot.com- check it out, it's pretty good) degenerated into the usual off-topic discussion/mudslinging that tends to happen around the end of a long winter. The discussion turned to, of all things, dangling participles. It was suggested that that would be a good name for a fly. I have taken on the challenge of designing such a fly. As Rodkilla (Mike) mentioned, the "dangling" is easy, but it is much harder to incorporate "participle" into a pattern. I've use the fact that a participle can be one part of speech that has properties of another to come up with one fly that has the properties of others- The "dangling" part is basically a Gartside Soft-Hackle, and the front part is a cone head wooly bugger. I have had good early season success in the Lee C&R section of the Housy with a yellow buggers and yellow Gartside soft hackles, so a combination of the two might work (though I hope it doesn't work too well- it's not very fun to tie!). Here it is- Ugly thing-

I like it!
Since this was my idea (and since I'm partial to big streamers with coneheads) I reserve the right to meet you guys at the Housy and give the fly a whirl.
Nice pattern Bart

Bart- I'll try to save it for you! I may even tie up another one in white. I hope to be getting out in the next week or two. I'll let you know. How far are you from Lee?

At the moment, I'm in Rochester hoping to stand on my favorite rock at dawn casting for big lake browns but the wind is currently blowing out of the north - not good for fly casting, just for getting wet. Lee is close, I'm in the Albany area so its an easy drive. Let me know. Bart

-Good lookin' streamer. I think we're close to going out on the Housy. The water is still in the 40's. The fish will be more active soon enough...

Jlibs We'll definitely have to head out soon. I'm back to a regular schedule of being in Pittsfield every Tuesday. I'll probably hit the upper east branch of the Westfield tomorrow for a 1/2 hour or so on the way home, but maybe the housy next week or the week after. don't worry Bartman, I'll save the dangling participle for you!

Great, thanks. I was dangling on the end of a pier Saturday morning with waves crashing on us with air temps at a cool 34 degrees. That lasted about 10 minutes before sanity kicked in. We had a few hours each morning before the games so we hiked into some spots on the Irondequoit Creek and we each took our first brown of the season although they were 13 inches, not pounds. Took 4 browns in all. The big surprise came Easter morning when a nice 8lb chrome steelhead decided to take my black wooly bugger on the swing. Fun stuff on a 6wt but I did land her in about 5 minutes.

While I don't have many dangly things to participate with.. er..um... I'm a fairly new Lee resident and would enjoy jumping on the wagon with some local fish catchers if they were willing.
I've been curious about when things might get productive in regards to water temp.
fwiw... I used to work & fish all the tribs of Lake Ontario before upgrading to the Berkshires... good luck, Bart.
...and I do like the looks of that yeller bugger!
