Kids in bed, Wild Turkey in my glass, the makings of an elk hair caddis in my vice, and thoughts of soon to be fishing in my head- It must be that time of the year! I think I enjoy the anticipation of the season to come as much as the season itself.

Yes, the promise of a new season. I've only been out for an hour so far and caught a few trees and had a bloody run in with a pricker bush. My anticiption had envisioned a big trout on opening day but then reality set in.

heading to the deerfield this week. Coming from colorado and have no clue as to what to throw. Any suggestions? Most of the rivers around here are in good shape with a mix of black stoneflies and some mayflies mixed in (hendricksons and quills) as we've had unseasonable weather here the past 5 days. It was 92 here in Troy this afternoon. I haven't been over there yet as I'm getting my Catskill fix in but the Deerfield has been stocked repeatedly over the past few weeks. The power Co. is running water mid-morning so I'd throw some mid-sized stonefly nymphs with a bead head PT or something similar as a dropper. When the water comes up mid-morning - black woolly bugger with a sinking line. If it stays this hot you might get some AM dry fly action before the release. Bart

heading to the deerfield this week. Coming from colorado and have no clue as to what to throw. Any suggestions? As mentioned above, you can get some dry-fly action in the AM. Had a HUGE midge hatch early last Friday morning. Too bad the water temps were 44F. I fish the Deerfield a lot (its is in my back yard!), and you can never go wrong with weighted WBs or cone-head Muddlers. Here's a shot from last Friday. The water was too cold for the fish to be active, but we had fun anyway.

I've been watching the h2oline numbers for Fife Brook dam, they went from high water 24/7 right into their summer, mid-day release routine. I don't mind that later in the year, but mid-day high water during the Hendrickson season?! Aargggghhh!
Patience, must have patience...
And fish closer to home. Hope the water's down in a couple weeks, I'm taking a week off for turkey and trout.
