Hi Guys, I need some help! I will be in Otis Mass. during the hot months of July & August. Where would you suggest there might be hungry trout during these low water months? I am not adversed to driving throughtout western mass and western connecticut. I belong to the Tarpon Coast Fly Fishers in Florida a Charter Member of FFF. Are there any Fly Fishing clubs in the Berskshires that will be holding meetings during those months? I would like to visit if there are clubs. If so where and when? I will look for postings here or you can send me an e-mail jimday99@mindspring.com

Dear Jim,
July and August are typically hot months in the Berkshires, as you mention. Your best bet is to drive from Otis. I'd head to the little brooks you can find on a topo map, or the easy to find C&R section of the Deerfield (dam released), or the Housatonic in Great Barrington early in the morning before the sun comes out, or on the Westfield River, also early.
Good luck.

Yeah, Jim, as Josh said, the rivers tend to be low. I would second his suggestion of hitting the Deerfield- plan on 1-1.5 hours from Otis. Conditions on the East Branch of the Westfield really depend on how the weather has been. The river rises and falls pretty quickly with the rain. Last year it fished well in the Summer months- two years ago it was so low and warm as to be cruel to fish there. The main branch of the Westfield is bigger and less prone to being too low/warm to fish. The Berkshire FFers don't hold regular meetings in the Summer, but be sure to post when you get to town and I'm sure some of us will be able to fill you in on how things are fishing.

Thank You for all of your input in Western Mass. Fishing.
I will be heading up to the West Branch of the Ausable River and Western Adirondack Area during the last two weeks of June and then I will be in Otis for July and August.
Dearfield & Farmington sounds like a winner during hot summer months. Guess I had better bring a flashlight for early morning fishing.
I will bring your e-mails with me to Otis. I would like meeting other fly fishermen from your area.
I live in Spring Hill, FL whre I fish in the Gulf of Mexico for Sea Trout, Reds, Snook, Mackerel, Cobia and anything else that will take a fly. We started the Tarpon Coast Fly Fishers Club (member of FFF) last fall. As of this week we have 42 members. I have never seen any club grow so fast. At our meeting last Wednesday we added 15 paid members. We will be closing membership when we reach 50 paid members and then start a waiting list. We will probably reach the 50 at our next meeting in May.
I am looking forward to some freshwater trout fishing this summer.
Keep a fly on,
Jim
