Catalogs. Sad to say my choices are pretty much limited to Orvis and Wally World. I do buy stuff from both but when it has to be exactly what I want and not just what they have in stock, catalogs and the net is the only real option. AgMD

Not many (any?) choices in the Berkshires. Down by me in the Valley we have Daves Pioneer Valley Sporting in Norhampton, Valley Sports Center in Easthampton, and B&G in Westfield. Cabelas is 45 minutes away in Hartford. Tying selection at the local shops is limited (e.g. nor much dry fly hackle), and confusing at times (no size 12 dry fly hooks?). Tackle selection is better, with good selections of leaders, tippets, etc, and usually a line or two in the right size. I would have to say though, that catalogs/online seem to be the best choice for the big items (rods, reels, line).

Crabby, Depends on where you live in the area, or willingness to travel. If you fish the Millers, stop in and see Rodney at Flagg's Flies in Orange right off rte 2.

As Jeff mentioned, there aren't too many options in the Berkshires. I typically order fly tying materials from LL Bean by calling the store directly and speaking with an expert who picks stuff out for me and mails it that day.

Unfortunately, the privately owned fly shops are fading fast.
I have a Cabelas about 15 minutes and a Bass Pro about 45 minutes from the house, but prefer not to spend my money there. Their inventory, especially on tying materials leaves alot to be desired.
I typically purchase on-line from Feather-Craft. They carry all the latest and greatest in materials (but I do buy my hair directly from Chris Helm, his quality is unmatched).

I would definitely suggest Feather Craft for fly tying material, and equipment like rods, reels, and line, excellent selection and great service.

Your feedback is very much appreciated. I should have mentioned that I live in the North Central part of Massachusetts and the company I worked for recently restructured my job away. My brother and I both visit the Berkshires frequently and have often talked about how nice it would be to relocate to that section of the state and open up a tackle shop. It's been kind of a running joke between us and since I no longer have a job and have a some money saved up I thought it might doable.
One of my concerns was that there was already an established store or there wasn't a market. I couldn't recall seeing any stores so I thought I'd ask. I've bought things from FeatherCraft and Cabela's and have been satisfied with their service so I'm not sure people would be willing to go out of their way to visit a brick and mortar store.

Kind of strange that I would mention Feather Craft last week and then receive a letter from them on Friday telling me that I'm one of their most valued customers and offering me a big discount on my next order. I wonder just how much money I've spent with them...

Yes, the Evening Sun Fly Shop is one of a kind!!! Charlie Shaden knows his stuff.
Yup, Cabela's in East Hartford gets the job done too.
