Anybody ever fish the White in Vt.?
When I was in my very early teens, my best friend's family had a campsite on the river. The one time I fished this river still rates as one of the best trout fishing experiences for me. I remember crossing bridges that didn't have any guardrails on them and if you stopped to look over the edge, you could see trout everywhere. The water was cold, gin clear and the trout were very cooperative.
There was a huge pool right next to the campsite and "Big Jake" as he was called lived under a log jam there. Jake was a huge brown easily pushing 7-8 lbs. We got him to turn on our - dare I say - spinners... a couple of times but that was it.
When you are in your teens and the appearance of the landscape is the last thing you are thinking about, but you still remember it vividly more than 30 years later, you know it was great...

I fished it once about 5 or 10 years ago, when I made a point of trying it because I remembered stories my Dad told me about fishing it in the 1950's.
I got up early one Saturday morning and drove from Adams, planning to make it a day trip. I drove for hours, and got lost along the way. When I finally got there, I only had an hour or so to fish, before I had to turn around and drive back.
The irony is that the only fish I caught in this famed trout stream was a decent size small mouth bass.

I fished it a few times in 2007. I did good on small wild rainbows. I also caught a 14" stockie bow, and 14" smallmouth. Between gas prices and the Didymo pain in the....... I never tried it in 2008. I didn't see any browns. If you check www.troutonthefly.com you'll see that there are not too many of those big browns in the photo gallery.

I'm heading back east in may. Planning on fishing the white and winooski for three or four days. I'm gonna suck it up and get a guide for the first day, what the hell it works for my clients out here in colorado. I'm looking for any other suggestions as to where to fish while i'm back that way.
