I’ve been fishing Berkshire streams for 30 years now, and can honestly say that in all that time I’ve only encountered two other fly fishermen who weren't with me. I don’t know why, because apparently there are others….
To be honest, in all those years I don’t think I’ve ever run into more than 5 or 6 other fishermen, let alone fly anglers. Once on a backwoods beaver pond I came across two fly fishermen who were there before me. I was honestly very surprised as I’d never seen anyone there previously, and haven’t since. I gave them wide berth and continued upstream.
The other encounters have all been with bait fishermen. All really nice guys. Only one expressed an interest in my fly rod.
I expect most of the reason is that, aside from the Deerfield, there are no “destination” (thank God!) fishing spots in the Berkshires. Are most locals bait/spinner guys? How about “Fish Pond?” I’ve heard there’s a cadre up there that park their carcasses near the old snack shop and fish all day long. Bait?
I’ve only fished the Deerfield a couple of times, and always at about 5AM, so there’s never anyone else there. I suppose if I fished it more often I’d see plenty of fly guys.
Anyone else bumping into fly fishermen on Berkshire waterways?

Hoosic River: In the many times I have fly fished this river, I have only run across one other fly guy. It was guite a few years ago in the stretch along Rt. 8 at the Adams/Cheshire line. The water was really low and he was throwing a chocolate brown EHC in about a size 18 and did quite well, despite the water conditions.
Deerfield River: In total I have probably seen less than a dozen other guys fly fishing. The most that I have seen at one time was 3 guys who were out with guide Jack Smola on the lower C&R section about a 1/2 mile above the pool at the confluence of the Cold and the Deerfield. The trout were rising all over the place but they didn't do very well. I have also seen a few guys in the upper C&R area along the stretch by the parking area below the dam. When I got to talking with them, most of them were from out of the area and from as far away as Boston (for the day?!).
When I was young, there was a gentleman who I would see almost everyday with chest waders, wicker creel and bamboo fly rod in hand walking along Grove Street in Adams heading to and from that section of the river.

The gentleman you saw fishing along Grove Street in Adams was probably Digger Degere. Even up until his last years I would see him all the time fishing that section of the Hoosic.

Hey Tim. You can read all about me here: orbitvisual.proboards31.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1114104551I remember meeting your father a long time ago. I know he was quite the fisherman, and a wonder at the tying vice. Your parents were friends with my grandparents. My grandfather passed away one year ago, and I last saw your mother at his funeral and a service at the church in Blackinton. She and my grandmother were very good friends. I was sorry to hear of her recent passing.

Being a “wonder” at fly tying is a complement Tim. As in, “wonderful.” I never saw your father tie, but my grandparents told me he was great.
Who am I? Name’s Shaun O’Connell. I was born in Williamstown and moved a mile or so down the road to Blackinton when I was 6. My parents still live there. Now I live down by Cape Cod for work. I don’t believe we’ve ever met, but, as I said, my grandparents (Betty and Al) were good friends with your parents.
What have I “done” when it comes to fly fishing? No awards, medals, or grand trips. I’m just a Berkshire trout fisherman; and that’s all I want to be….

Shaun: it may have been Digger. The gent wore hearing aids in both ears, was around 40-45 at the time, wore glasses and was kind of on the portly side.
Tim:

When it comes to the Hoosic, I thought that it was Tim's river, but Joe's hole? Now it turns out that Wintershope (Paul) is the Rivermaster? I'm so confused....

;DI know I cant hide from you Joe,and really I dont want too,ya know the great floods of the fall have had a great impact on the hoosac river and this year may not be as good as some think. And you must remember that the hound and hunt clubb in Adams is not stocking brown trout and more.I think we may need some brown trout to help this river get back in shape.Im sure that some wild trout survived it all,but Im sure what ever redds where there are gone.So one year of spawning is down the drain.I saw this happen on the Lemoilllie in Vermont and it took years to come back.It will be interesting this spring to see what has happened to the river.I bet those bass are gone. It is my river and I chalange anyone to out fish me! on it. Wintershope I got one 31&1/4"up by west on a 26 tryco a few years ago! It was great! It took till dark to land held it up and went Yeha! Realeced it then went to store and bought a beer I was still shaking ! Shure wish I had my camera with me that day but i did have a Ruller. Do not stock the river! We want wild browns not Slugish Stocked fish they will ruin the jean pool ! Did you people ever hear of the vebare box not shuer if thats the way it its spelled . But they put wild eggs in them and burry them in the gravel Just like Wittlock did on the White river. Thats the way to go if you want to incress the fish Pop. The trout will still be thear! I don't know about the Bass never cought one in my life! I hope it washed some of the big rainbows down from up above! Hears a pic of a small one I got up by west to! See ya on the river maybe just about every time I am thear no one else is! Its pritty good about 10 in the morning some times all day when a good hatch is on the slufers are great! Don’t be so sensitive Tim! I wasn’t talking about you being on dial-up. What I meant was, it’s going to take a long time for other people to view all 5 pictures if they have dial up. It takes a long time for pictures to come into view when someone is on dial-up. Or so I’m told….

Just looked I can't see my computer on,of topic-Windsor Castle ether can you? That seams funny i don't get it?! I do see it. I think that you’re posting it as a URL rather than a picture…. I think you’re posting it like this (I’m leaving the U off of the first "URL" and the I off of the first "IMG" so you can see the string instead of the photo. There is an * where those letters were): [*RL=http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg10518ec.png][*MG]http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/4061/cimg10518ec.th.png[/IMG] When you should be posting it like this (again, leaving the I out of the first "IMG" so you can see the string instead of the photo: [*MG]http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/4061/cimg10518ec.th.png[/IMG]
